Málaga's compact historic centre packs a Moorish fortress (the Alcazaba), a Roman theatre at its foot, the cathedral locals call "La Manquita", and the Picasso Museum, all walkable in an afternoon. The tapas bars and side streets around Calle Larios make it easy to turn a museum trip into a full day out.
Simon's tip
Buy Alcazaba tickets online to skip the queue, and go up in the late afternoon when the light and the heat are both kinder. In December, come after dark: the Calle Larios Christmas lights are among the best in Spain, with a nightly light-and-music show.
